Tucked deep within the northern Alberta wilderness, Aurora Borealis Indigenous Village offers one of Canada’s most immersive and authentic astrotourism experiences. Located roughly two hours from Fort McMurray, the journey itself sets the tone. Guests travel by comfortable touring van, enjoying snacks and interpretive narration that weave together the rich Indigenous and non-Indigenous history of the region, grounding the experience in place long before nightfall.

Access to the Village is intentionally limited. Hidden behind a locked gate on an old industrial road, the site is accessible only to guests, preserving both the land and the night sky. From the parking area, the final approach is an adventure in itself: a 20-minute ATV ride in warmer months or a 10-minute snowmobile journey in winter along a trail impassable by vehicle. This seclusion not only protects the pristine dark sky but also creates exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Arriving at the Village feels like stepping back in time. The camp is an authentic Indigenous bush camp inspired by the way Charles and his family lived decades ago, thoughtfully enhanced with modern comforts. Guests gather in a heated dining shack that serves as a communal heart of the Village, offering warm meals, shared stories, and a welcoming space to connect.

Sleeping tipis are designed for all seasons, featuring framed beds, plush mattresses, duvets, and wood stoves that keep the space cozy through long northern nights. A heated wash house serves all guests, while evenings unfold around the fire circle—where Indigenous knowledge, storytelling, and cultural presentations are shared beneath a vast, unspoiled sky.

Here, the darkness is profound. With minimal light pollution, the aurora borealis can often be seen dancing overhead, sometimes on an almost nightly basis. More than a place to witness the northern lights, Aurora Borealis Indigenous Village is a place to experience them through the lens of Indigenous heritage, respect for the land, and a deep connection to the rhythms of the night sky.
